That may seem like a dumb question, but in today's fast paced technological world, that literally needs to be where we start. There are three types of hearing technology with two of them commonly (and erroneously) getting labeled as "hearing aids."

The first category are called PSAs (Personal Sound Amplifiers). These are not real hearing aids, they are just amplifiers and are not designed to correct a hearing loss. They are peices of junk from China and end up in the garbage after a couple uses. They are a waste of time and money. They range in price from $30 to $300 each.

An OTC is an "Over The Counter" hearing aid. The OTCs are a big step up from a PSA but they are still generic. They are usually a very low grade hearing aid that has been pre-programmed to the most common generic hearing loss. Although they are better than a PSA as far as sound quality, they may not help you hear any better than a PSA because they are not programmed (fine-tuned) to your exact hearing loss. They range in price from $500 to $1000 each.

REAL Hearing Aids

A true hearing aid is set to your actual hearing loss. It requires a hearing test so that it can be set to your actual prescription. It is your only valid choice if you want to hear your best. Unfortunately, they can be quite expensive, if purchased locally. Prices range from $1200 to $4000 each!
